Description
She is back! Every year we start paying serious attention to our resident Great Horned Owls, hoping to find where they are nesting this time.
Surprisingly the female is diligently sitting on her eggs in an old site which is so decrepit that we weren't expecting her and her mate to use it this year.
Most exciting for us all is that she is in full view, and we photographers are making fast tracks to see her first thing when we visit this National Wildlife Refuge in the Nisqually River's delta.
With the side of the nest now open to the eye, due to deterioration, we have a view of the whole nest when the sun is not right behind the tree. A bit of juggling to get there at the right time light-wise.
This past year we had two young, the year before three. What will it be this time?
We should know next month.

Shannon Story
Love this beauty. I didn't know there were black owls!
I'ina Van Lawick replied:
Thank you very much, Shannon. She does look very dark. We should be seeing her young mid-Feb. or early March.

Nice shot!
I'ina Van Lawick replied:
Thanks, Daniel. All of us at the Refuge are so excited to see her back on a nest again.
