What a wonderful image, l'ina! I love the delicacy of the duckweed on his skin ...it's actually quite pretty. (We've lived on many lakes in many places through the years. Most suffered occasionally from seasonal duckweed and I NEVER thought of it as pretty before. l/f

I'ina Van Lawick replied:

Love you comment, Claudia. Yes, it is all in context how we feel about something.

Artist's Description

The only visible parts of this bullfrog were its eyes and body shape under the duckweed.
This is an invasive species at our Refuge, preying on small birds, ducklings and goslings as well. It was seen snatching a swallow out of the air and swallowing it whole. Luckily the ducks and other waterfowl enjoy its eggs, so the number of these amphibians is small.
They can actually be quite beautiful with their golden eyes and variety of green colors of their skin.

About I'ina Van Lawick

I'ina Van Lawick

i'ina Van Lawick My love has always been Nature. Photography started for me when my grandmother gave me an ancient Kodak Box Camera when I was 11 years old. In Art School Photography was an important elective for me besides my Major in Metalsmithing. Now that Carpal Tunnel to both wrists nixed my ability to work with metal I have taken up photography again after being introduced to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, WA; and consequently, digital photography. What a find. Not only do I now enjoy pursuing my love for nature photography, but I am also enjoying my work as a Volunteer in the Refuge's Environmental Education Program for our schools, and keeping the Refuge's photo files supplied with nature shots for their...
