Artist's Description

As the sun was rising, the beach quickly filled with members of the Quinault tribe.
It was a perfect tide for digging razor clams.
The men haul a net attached to their waist, very useful for having both hands free to dig, and then chuck each clam into the net.

These clams make a delicious chowder, which my dutch aunt prepares each New Year's eve from the clams that my uncle digs on the few days a year, when non-native people are allowed to dig for them. They are a lot of work to clean and worth the labor. When cleaned, they are popped into the freezer to await the preparation of this New Year's feast.

This is a photograph which has been digitally manipulated to bring out the ruggedness of this foraging experience..

Not only do I now enjoy pursuing my love for nature photography, but I am also enjoying my work as a Volunteer in the Refuge's Environmental Education Program for our schools, and keeping the Refuge's photo files supplied with nature shots for their...
