This male Red-breasted Sapsucker was tapping away at the trunk of the maple tree and had a good-sized hole to let the sap flow. Not only do these birds lick up the sap, but the insects that stick to the sap after it flows. And I have seen it flow literally down the trunks of maples.
Even other animals appreciate the treat, like a squirrel and possum that I saw licking the sap in such enjoyment that they ignored me..
