I remember seeing her and was about to say that she looks much better now, but see that she has since disappeared. I was never able to get this close to her. Such a nice tribute from you!

I'ina Van Lawick replied:

Thanks, Elaine. I felt so bad for her. She really had a sweet personality.

Artist's Description

I am posting this image of a little cat that was abandoned as a kitten at our wildlife refuge. This happens a lot. The little one so much wanted to be be close to humans, but was just not trusting enough. A number of us were happy to give her a home, but the trap we set only caught a possum, the same one every time. The staff left food out for her, and she seemed to be able to subsist on whatever she was catching out in the woods. She was injured at some point and walked around with a bloody tail, and that part - half of her tail - eventually fell of. She seemed OK after that, and came as close to me as she could, purring, but still distrusting, too. Eventually she disappeared, what with the coyotes, eagles, and hawks, as well as owls in the woods.
I just want to honor her short life. It makes me so sad to see such beauty wasted, and ending up as fodder for some predator. Unfortunately this happens a lot where unwanted kittens are dropped off on other refuges too.

I'ina Van Lawick

In Art School Photography was an important elective for me besides my Major in Metalsmithing. Now that Carpal Tunnel to both wrists nixed my ability to work with metal I have taken up photography again after being introduced to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, WA; and consequently, digital photography. What a find. Not only do I now enjoy pursuing my love for nature photography, but I am also enjoying my work as a Volunteer in the Refuge's Environmental Education Program for our schools, and keeping the Refuge's photo files supplied with nature shots for their...
