Description
This female Hooded Merganser was resting in the sun. They always look so sassy with their fancy do and mannerisms.
Her nest was probably in a nearby tree. The chicks just fall out when they are big enough and just tumble down without getting hurt. Nature is amazing that way.
It is the same with the Canada Geese who at times nest in trees. This year we had one who nested successfully in the old Great Horned Owls nest. A photo buddy of mine actually saw them tumble out and take off running with their parents.

She IS sassy. :) And what a gorgeous capture with reflection. I like the shapes of the water and the overall darker tones of the image. Your beautiful image has been featured by Wild Birds Of The World. L/F

What a sweetie! Because of the "hairdo" .. fluffed out ... I thought it was a baby; read your informative description, l'ina, & found out otherwise ; love the capture & the great water reflection, so green!;))
I'ina Van Lawick replied:
Thanks, Connie. Her chicks are somewhere, but have not seen them. This mama leaves them on their own at a young age. Yes, I always see wonderful reflections with so many trees around. Glad you enjoyed it. Only just put it up. Hope to get out there tomorrow, weather willing.
